I have been working towards the London Art Fair since September, producing a large body of work which is being exhibited by Byard Art. It is really exciting to have created so many Bug Balls, nearly fulfilling my ambition of covering a whole wall with Bug and Moth Ball Collections. Each insect seems to develop my work and skills in some way.
2011 has been another mad year, with commissions, each one of which has been a pleasure and even an honour to create – a unique collection of Bug Balls for a wedding present from the Groom to the Bride, unbelievably she had been in the business of training bees as sniffer dogs (bees). A collection of Pond Insects, a collection of North American Bugs which will be travelling to Wisconsin, USA and Bug Ball Pieces destined for private collections in Australia and Brunei!
September saw the fruition of months of planning and making at the opening of the Portraits in the Making Exhibition at Pitzhanger Manor House and Gallery in Ealing, the country house of Sir John Soane. This was an exhibition curated by Greg Parsons in which a group of seventeen artists, who came together as part of the Crafts Council’s Hothouse Programme, responded to Soane’s property and collections. A large and exciting part of the exhibition was the Arts Council funded Handling Exhibits which allowed visitors to interact and handle the pieces created specifically for the purpose by the artists, along with a series of workshops. The exhibition was opened by Rose Greenlees, Executive Director of the Crafts Council and was visited by over 5000 people.
